Webmaster’s note: This was an unusual session, because I’d been interviewing James for an article for Cult Times magazine #80, and also catching up on some other topics. As a result, the actual question and answer portion of the evening wasn’t very long, so the dialogue is primarily between myself and James (with Charlie DeMars showing up toward the end). I have, however, included a few of the unused quotes from the interview….

Ghost of the Robot has an international following, Web sites built by fans and gigs at Hollywood’s hottest nightclubs. Not bad for a band that’s been together for less than a year and doesn’t have a full-length album to its name.

The 30-year-old American actor James Marsters plays bad-boy peroxide vampire Spike in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Marsters is currently filming a new series of Buffy, due to screen on BBC2 this autumn, in which his character’s relationship with Buffy (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) reaches boiling point.

Murderer, liar, cheat. Heaven doesn’t want him and Hell isn’t ready for him. On screen Spike tries hard to be Sunnydale’s Big Bad, but away from the cameras, alter-ego James Marsters may still be one of the coolest people you’d ever want to meet.

“I’m not going to ask you a thing about Buffy,” I announced to James Marsters at Shore Leave 24 last month. His face lit up as he reclined in his chair. I’m often fascinated by the choices of actors for certain roles. Not only do I tend to look for what natural qualities an ingénue brings to the character, but also what trait of the part lies dormant in the performer. I couldn’t help myself from thinking how little he actually looks like his counterpart on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He is so not Spike.

Spike Gives ‘Buffy’ a Darker, Sexier Tone (english)

It’s a match made in, well, not heaven. Among the most riveting developments last season on UPN’ s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was the odd coupling of just-back-from-the-dead Buffy Summers, (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and the drop-deadly handsome, and ageless, platinum blond bloodsucker Spike, played by James Marsters.

JAMES: What I’d like to do is go straight to Q&A. I can talk like crazy about “Buffy” because I’m actually a fan of the show, but I like to start off with what you guys like to talk about — that’s probably the best way.

The screaming has died down and James Marsters – the SFX Event’s biggest guest – is ready to talk life, the universe and everything to Steve O’Brien…

“Who’d have thought. There’s Sarah!” James Marsters says, jabbing a finger toward a passing bus as we glide into the cultural climes of Leeds.

TOWSON, MD (@N-Zone Buffy Guide) – Some of the hottest tickets around this summer for fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” were those for the ShoreLeave 24 convention held this July 12 – 14th in Towson, Maryland. In one of his rare East Coast appearances, actor James Marsters (“Spike the Vampire”) was a headlining guest for the weekend genre convention dedicated to all things Trek and sci-fi related. Pouncing on the rare opportunity, “Spike” fans came out in record numbers for a chance to catch one of the shows most popular actors relate some “Buffy” tales in the flesh.

Crossroads (english)

Upon meeting James Marsters, the actor behind “Buffy the vampire Slayer’s” Sid Vicious-esque blood-sucker Spike, you’re immediately struck with two realizations: He’s not English and he doesn’t bite. As off-putting as the character makes himself out to be, Marsters is quite the opposite. Chatty and down to earth, the modest actor is still a Northern California boy at heart, grateful for the opportunities his Buffy role has provided him-especially considering he was always the kid who didn’t “fit in” while growing up.

Refreshingly down-to- earth, with a witty but slightly twisted sense of humour, James Marsters is on a five-year high.
Once the “disposable villain” destined for a quick death on the producer’s chopping block, his character Spike is now a regular blood-sucking villainous vampire on cult show Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which goes into its sixth season on BBC Two on Thursday.

Any episode of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer has better action than most of the studio movies released, not to mention emotional subtext. So, the opportunity to interview one of the show’s stars was more exciting to me than most of my daily interviews.
