panelist: James Marsters, Elisabeth Röhm and Ken Feinberg

What is your favourite movie and why.

JM: I think my favourite movie is Apocalypse Now. I think it was a really cogent criticism of the softness of American culture, specifically why we lost that war. We were fighting an enemy, when they wanted a steak, they’d go kill the cow…

note: Canadian radio station interviewed James and Shadow Puppets producer and Saskatchewan native Bob Crowe.

JG – A new film Shadow Puppets which is getting a remarkable buzz at the international film festival in Brussels, it is just out now and when we heard about this which is a ‘treat for horror fans’ it’s being billed- it’s a psychological thriller about a group of people who wake up in an insane asylum with no memory of who they are or why they’re there. So a great horror flick, but then we realise this thing is produced by a Saskatechewan company,…

James Marsters is best know for playing Spike on both Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, where his mix of intensity, wit, and soul (pun intended) earned him a devoted following. He currently has a recurring role on Without A Trace and later this season will return to Smallville for multiple episodes (reprising a role from last year) as well as appearing on the upcoming second season of BBC America’s Torchwood. Recently Boston Now talked to him about his acting, his singing, and the part that made him famous.

So up until this point, I can honestly say that I give myself some degree of credit (although said degree has varied) for getting every interview I’ve ever done for TWoP. That streak has now ended, although given the interviewee, I’m not exactly complaining. I’d like, on behalf of TWoP, to thank James’s publicist Jenni, who was a total sweetheart in arranging this interview, and, of course, the man himself, the former star of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, who gave me about fifty minutes when we were scheduled for twenty. He’s a real good and fun guy, folks, and here’s what he had to say.

Superman Doomsday DVD Review (english) – IGN.com

It should be noted from the very beginning that this reviewer is approaching Superman Doomsday with an absence of appropriate experience. Having never picked up a Superman comic – and really having only seen the popular films – I watched this animated mash-up of ideas as a singular experience, rather than simply the latest entry in a long, evolving line of Superman history.

Ex-’Buffy,’ ‘Angel’ star to recur on CBS drama

James Marsters will trade in his supernatural garb for a role as a down-to-earth cop on “Without a Trace” this season.

The former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel” star has taken a recurring part on the CBS drama, Marsters says on his web site. As described there, the role sounds like it could have the potential for a multi-episode arc.

Superman: Doomsday consists essentially of two bunker-busting fight scenes separated by a pretty good Lois Lane story. It’s not really a stripped-down retelling of the 1992-93 Superman titles’ death/funeral/return arcs. Instead, it diverts significantly from that source material in order to make its story accessible. The result is simple but not dumbed-down…

SHADOW PUPPETS stars James Marsters and Tony Todd have a few things in common: diverse careers spanning all genres in film, TV and stage, being best-known for horror roles—and being unafraid of getting pigeonholed in fright fare. “I understand genre, as opposed to an actor who’s just showing up but doesn’t really respect it,” says Todd, star of the CANDYMAN franchise and the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD remake, on SHADOW PUPPETS’ set. “Maybe that’s why I get hired.”

You said yesterday that you read the Dresden novels for your own pleasure and I got into them because you were reading them. Do you do any kind of preparation, like making notes, because you’re really good. And also, which is your favorite book and character to do?

Wow. Uhm, I don’t do a lot of preparation. In general, I find that he’s a good writer so I want him to affect me as opposed to me making like an intellectual choice beforehand, like how”it was written so deftly” many English accents do I have, and use number three here and number seven here. I try to, if I can, come up with it on the fly and usually that doesn’t work and we have to go back. (laughs) But I find that this is a little more organic and the last book I did, Summer Knight – that blew up in my face because of the Summer Council scene and there were like fifteen booming, …

Okay? so, can you all hear very well right in the back? I want to clarify that. You’re good? Okay great. So, give a warm welcome to Mr James Marsters.
