Acting careers are all about ups and downs. Can you tell us what positives you can take from the cancellation of ANGEL?

JAMES MARSTERS: Oh, my God. Well, first of all, the chaos is really potential if you’re willing to look at it that way. Change is good if you’re willing…

Fans of BtVS and AtS know him as Spike, the blond, good looking British bloodsucker with plenty of attitude. However, years before James Marsters got his vampire fangs, he played a very different type of role, “My very first time in front of the camera was as a bellhop in an episode of Northern Exposure,” he recall. “I had five lines, all of which were monosyllabic, like ‘Uh, yeah,’ and I think I also had an ‘Uh-oh’ to master. Thank God it wasn’t anything more than that because I was nervous as hell.

A funny thing happened to James Marsters on his way to television stardom. The actor, who’s well known to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel viewers as Spike, trekked to Los Angeles in the ’90s with one goal in mind. “I came to make good money,” he admits. “The idea was to make a quarter of a million and get out.” Financial gain was the only reward he believed he’d reap…

We just watched the movie Chance, and my question is what was it like to wear women’s clothes and the lipstick?

[joking] Surprisingly liberating… yeah. But I was upset. Because um… I don’t think you should make fun of actors…when they’re in a public situation, and I thought that since I was doing them a favour, that wearing the dress the whole crew would be respectful. I was like hiding in the bedroom in my dress [makes whiny crying noise]. [Talks about nudity on Buffy, how for movies you can decide if you think it's worth it or not, while on Buffy not only it was thrown on him, but he was also the only one in the nude.]

After becoming one of Buffy’s best-loved characters, Spike is now calling the shoots on “Angel.” Actor James Marsters bares his soul to Abbie Bernstein about the bad boy vamp’s new lease of life…

For six years, Spike was the ultimate Buffy bad boy. He was a leather-clad vamp whose razor-sharp put-downs and couldn’t-care-less demeanour set him apart from the show’s more well-meaning characters. But, by the time he was “toasted and ghosted” in the show’s apocalyptic finale, CHOSEN, it seemed as if the bleached-blond bloodsucker had been through just about everything.

How does he feel personally about wearing the Nazi Uniform as Spike. Are you uncomfortable doing certain things, and if you are, where would you draw the line?

Good question, wow. Yeah, okay it’s a weird thing, when I saw the script and I read it? I laughed out loud. That Spike would be in a Nazi uniform but he’d just happened to have eaten one [Spike voice] ‘I’m not a Nazi, I just ate one’. But then when I got into film and they put the thing on me, it was weird. The first two days I would have to have, I would take it off and put it away when I got off the set. One time I forgot and I was standing in the lunch line, [pulls face, audience sort of sympathizes] Yeah. But then by the middle I got used to it, and I’d catch myself in the mirror and for one second I thought ‘hey I look good’ [audience sympathizes again]. But as far as things that make me uncomfortable,
